As global renewable energy installations continue to grow rapidly, Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) have become critical infrastructure for power dispatch. However, the associated risks of thermal runaway and explosion remain a major challenge that the industry cannot ignore.
Liansuo Construction Technology, an industrial safety company in Taiwan, has recently launched a three-stage explosion venting protection system designed for BESS containers. By incorporating technology from RSBP, a leading European brand, the company provides energy storage sites with a systematic solution that complies with international standards.
Thermal Runaway Risks Must Not Be Ignored
Under abnormal conditions, lithium batteries may release a large volume of flammable gases. Once the concentration exceeds the Lower Flammability Limit (LFL), it may trigger a chain explosion, resulting in total container destruction, facility damage, and even casualties. Even with relatively stable Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) batteries, this risk still exists and should not be underestimated.
Three Core Products Form a Dual-Layer Active Protection System
The BESS explosion venting protection system launched by Liansuo consists of three core products, forming a dual-layer protection mechanism of Level 1 Preventive Venting → Level 2 Explosion Venting:
- BESS Vent (Controlled Venting System)

At the early stage of battery cell failure, the system is activated to initiate controlled venting through an electrically driven linear actuator that opens the cover. This keeps the flammable gas concentration below the Lower Flammability Limit and effectively prevents the incident from escalating. - Vent PRO F&S (Explosion Venting Device)

When venting is insufficient and gas continues to accumulate, the device activates automatically, reducing the explosion pressure inside the container from 77–88 bar to 0.10.1–0.20.2 bar almost instantly. This ensures the structural integrity of the container, prevents the container doors from being blown open, and limits the damage to a single container. It has been verified in real explosion scenarios, with an activation reliability of 100%100%. - DivEx (Directional Explosion Venting Device)

As an accessory to Vent PRO, DivEx directs the explosion pressure wave and flames toward a predetermined safe direction. This significantly reduces the hazardous area and improves both personnel safety in movement routes and space utilization efficiency within the site.
Five Installation Configurations for Different Application Scenarios
The system offers five standard configurations for both top-mounted and side-mounted installations. Options range from a basic configuration with a single Vent PRO unit to a full configuration integrating BESS Vent, Vent PRO, and DivEx. These can be selected flexibly according to the scale of the energy storage site and the level of risk.
All configurations have passed real explosion scenario testing and can also be supported by customized engineering calculations based on the actual geometry of the container.
Compliance with International Standards Enhances Commercial Competitiveness
The complete system complies with major international standards, including EN 14797, NFPA 68, NFPA 69, NFPA 855, ATEX, and UL 9540A. It can help project owners obtain more favorable terms when reporting to insurance companies such as FM. Quantified risk control records may help reduce insurance premiums and accelerate the resumption of operations after an incident, thereby strengthening investor confidence and long-term operational stability.
Liansuo Construction Technology also currently provides additional services such as risk assessment studies, technical calculations, project consulting, and assistance in negotiations with investors or insurance companies, helping project owners establish a complete BESS safety management framework.
